<B>Cuttlebone-An Excellent Natural Calcium Source
Cuttlebone-An Excellent Natural Calcium Source

Cuttlebone is an excellent source of calcium for our shelled friends. The picture shows an untouched cuttlebone, and one that has been sitting in a turtle enclosure. The oval shaped pieces can sipmly be placed in a tortoise's enclosure and left. It is not harmed by rain, variations in temperature, and can also be ground or broken into smaller pieces.

Tortoises in the wild wear down their mandible (beak) and keep it smoothy trimmed by chewing on old bones, rocks, tough plant matter, and a variety of other items. It's rare to see a wild tortoise with an overgrown beak.
When left in enclosures, female tortoises may suddenly eat a large amount of cuttlebone, this is perfectly normal, and is a simple, effective, and beneficial way to provide quality calcium on an as-needed basis. Female tortoises which may be gravid, and juveniles going through "growth spurts" benefit greatly. In our experience, tortoises may sometimes ignore a new cuttlebone. This is also normal. Tortoises are the best judge of what they need, and when they need it.

Offering this item free choice is one of the simplest, cheapest, yet healthiest things you can do for any species of tortoise. Box turtles can also benefit by having cuttlebone available at all times.
